Nearly 12,600 Displaced Families Across Six Provinces Amid Latest Military Escalation In Yemen

YEMEN / ISTANBUL, Sept 16 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- The Yemeni government said on Tuesday that nearly 12,600 families have been displaced across six provinces in the latest wave of displacement during the country’s military escalation, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.

Yemen's Planning and International Cooperation Minister Mohammed Al-Baqmi said during a meeting with Foreign Minister Afrah Al-Zouba and representatives of the UN, international groups, and non-governmental organisations that those 12,597 displaced families face urgent needs for shelter, food, and safe water.

Al-Baqmi called for urgent international action to mobilise resources and address funding gaps in the humanitarian response, according to Yemen’s state-run Saba news agency.

Separately, local authorities in the interim capital of Aden announced that Governor Abdulrahman Sheikh issued a decision to form a humanitarian response cell to address needs arising from the military escalation and waves of displacement toward the city.

According to the local authorities, the cell will assess the needs of displaced people from the western coast and Taiz and work to provide assistance within available resources.

Yemen had been under a relative lull since April 2022 after nearly 12 years of war between government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the Iranian-backed Houthis, who seized control of the capital Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014.

Since late 2023, after the Gaza war began, the Houthis have become increasingly involved in regional hostilities, launching attacks on Israel and commercial shipping in the Red Sea, while recent renewed fighting has raised fears of a return to full-scale conflict in Yemen.
