NEW DELHI, Sept 13 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- BRICS leaders have noted the importance of continuing work on an initiative to create a common grain exchange within the bloc, according to a joint statement issued on Saturday at the summit in New Delhi, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“We acknowledge the importance of continuing to develop the initiative to establish a grain trading platform within BRICS (the BRICS Grain Exchange) and welcome further discussions on the modalities of its functioning and its subsequent development, as well as its expansion into other agricultural products and commodities,” the document read.
The leaders also noted BRICS’ key role in global food production and emphasised the need to ensure food security and reduce the impact of sharp price fluctuations and supply disruptions, including fertiliser shortages.
The BRICS Summit is taking place in New Delhi on Sept 12-13.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2011.
Several more countries have joined BRICS since 2024.
India is holding this year’s rotating BRICS chairmanship.
