ARAU, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- The Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid, granted an audience to India's newly appointed High Commissioner to Malaysia, Somnath Ghosh, at Balai Menghadap Biru, Istana Arau here last Tuesday.
Istana Arau said in a statement today that during the audience, both parties discussed various new opportunities for cooperation for mutual prosperity, with India committed to continuing to explore potential collaboration in the education and economic sectors in Perlis.
“India has always held in high regard the leadership charisma and contributions of the Perlis Royal Institution in fostering harmony and progress,” the statement said.
Accompanying Their Royal Highnesses at the meeting were the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, and the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.
Istana Arau said bilateral ties between India and Perlis dated back to the first state visit to India by the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the late Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, in December 1961, a historic visit that had a significant impact on both countries.
“As the first state visit following independence, it opened a new chapter and laid a strong foundation for modern diplomatic relations between the Federation of Malaya (Malaysia) and India.
“The extraordinary reception accorded by India's top leadership at the time reflected the high regard for Malaysia's royal institution,” the statement said.
In the same statement, Ghosh said the courtesy call on the Raja of Perlis and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis was aimed at strengthening the close bilateral ties between India and Perlis, which had been established since the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s first state visit to India.
He expressed confidence that the close ties between India and Perlis would continue to flourish for the well-being of the people of both countries.
