Helicopter Tragedy: MMA Calls For Stronger Asset Safety, Health Worker Protection

IPOH, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- The recent tragic helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Ulu Baram, Sarawak, which claimed the lives of health workers, should serve as a turning point for relevant parties to strengthen medical transport safety standards nationwide.

Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo said the government must ensure that all assets used to transport health workers meet safety standards to reduce the risk of accidents while they are carrying out their duties in the field.

“Assessments of the lifespan of assets, maintenance records, safety certifications, emergency equipment, as well as their suitability for the terrain and weather conditions, must be conducted regularly and thoroughly by the relevant authorities.

“No mode of transport, whether aircraft, ambulances or boats, should be used simply because it is available or tied to a contract. The welfare and safety of health workers must always be the highest priority,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after attending the MMA National Convention and Scientific Congress 2026 at a hotel here today.

On Sept 8, a BO-105 helicopter carrying five people crashed near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport) in Ulu Baram, Sarawak, killing four health workers and a pilot.

Meanwhile, Thirunavukarasu said the government should also review the RM30 Air Health Service Incentive Payment, which has been in place since 1978, as it is no longer in line with the current working environment and risks involved.

He also proposed that dedicated travel and personal accident insurance coverage be provided to every health worker carrying out official duties in any field, whether by air, land or sea.

“The RM30 incentive payment must be comprehensively reviewed to ensure adequate and fair protection is provided to those performing high-risk duties, regardless of their service category.

“As for the insurance coverage, it must be provided regardless of whether the health workers are permanent or contract staff, or employed through appointed operators,” he said.
