‘Disrespectful’ – Influencers Spark US Open Debate

LONDON, Sept 4 (Bernama-PA Media/dpa) -- Naomi Osaka called on spectators at the United States (US) Open to respect tennis etiquette after social media influencers sparked debate by disrupting her first-round match, reported PA Media/dpa.

Around 100 influencers and content creators have been accredited for this year’s tournament in New York, twice as many as last year, as organisers seek to reach new audiences.

Some players have questioned whether the push for online engagement has gone too far after spectators were reprimanded for filming themselves and using a portable ring light while Osaka was serving during her first-round win over Anastasia Zakharova.

Two-time champion Osaka said the chair umpire had repeatedly called for silence during her second-round victory over Katerina Siniakova on Thursday.

“I think obviously if you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport,” she said.

“I feel like it’s common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette.”

The US Open introduced a policy of free fan movement in 2024, meaning spectators no longer have to wait until changeovers to take their seats.

Since Osaka’s opening match, there has been increased messaging on screens reminding spectators to refrain from any activity that could disrupt play, including excessive noise, flash photography and the use of ring lights.

American 11th seed Jessica Pegula said some of the behaviour had been “disrespectful”.

“I can appreciate the influencers coming and showcasing the US Open experience,” she said.

“But I do think that it’s tough when you see videos of them taking pictures and using the selfie lights.

“People are down there trying to perform. It’s their career and their job. It seems a bit disrespectful.”

Arthur Ashe Stadium – the US Open’s main venue – is the biggest tennis stadium in the world, and matches are often accompanied by a buzz of noise.

World number four Coco Gauff welcomed the influx of new fans but said they should respect the traditions of tennis.

“I definitely think it’s cool to have a new demographic, and I definitely think it helps grow the sport,” she said.

“But if you’re being invited to a red carpet, you wouldn’t show up in jeans.

“I think it’s just about following the etiquette of the sport.”

The US Tennis Association said it wanted fans to have an “incredible time” while ensuring they did not interfere with the action.

“We are continually looking for ways to ensure fans in the stands know what is permitted and what is prohibited,” the governing body said in a statement.
