WASHINGTON, Aug 22 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The New York Police Department said it is prepared to take down any unauthorised drones hovering over tennis matches at the United State (US) Open tournament, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
“The NYPD now has new independent legal authority to conduct drone mitigation operations at major events when necessary to address unauthorised drone activity,” the police was quoted as saying by the New York Post.
The US Open will be the first major event at which the NYPD uses the new authority, the department added.
The US Open is the final Grand Slam tournament of 2026, running from Aug 30 to Sept 13 in New York.
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka are the reigning US Open men’s and women’s singles champions, respectively.
