TASHKENT, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- The rapidly changing media landscape demands that media professionals uphold stronger journalistic standards and greater responsibility in ensuring accurate and responsible reporting to a wider audience, an Uzbek official said.
Head of the Communications Department of the Presidential Administration of Uzbekistan, Sherzod Asadov said journalists today play a broader role beyond reporting, with their work increasingly shaping public narratives and potentially influencing millions of people.
“Our task is to ensure that society received more open and responsible media environment. With the power to influence millions of people, journalists carry a significant responsibility in shaping public understanding and encouraging informed discussions,” he said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the International Media Forum “Islamic Civilisation: A New Perspective – New Discoveries” here on Tuesday, Asadov, who is also Press Secretary to Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, said journalists must constantly strengthen their skills and professional responsibility while safeguarding journalistic principles and media freedom.
“The fundamental principles of journalism must remain strong and relevant. Journalists should not remain silent when freedom of speech and media freedom are threatened or infringed upon in different parts of the world,” he said.
He said the forum, which is being held at the Islamic Civilisation Centre through Friday, is an important global platform for strengthening the role of journalism in promoting knowledge and understanding, particularly of Islamic civilisation.
Bringing together more than 300 media practitioners and experts from 50 countries, the event enables media professionals to share ideas and experiences, especially in the current era where misinformation and fake news are spreading daily across digital platforms.
“Through such engagements, we can work together to uphold professional standards, defend media freedom and promote quality journalism for the benefit of society by providing accurate, balanced and verified information to the public,” he said.
The forum, organised by the Islamic Civilisation Centre, is also being held in conjunction with the 35th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s independence.
