KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- The strengthening of the governance of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) is important from an economic perspective, taking into account the role and scale of the institution which manages the trust of more than 9.8 million depositors and holds a significant position as an institutional investor in the domestic economy.
Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that with investments exceeding RM96 billion, TH’s governance has broader implications for confidence in institutions and the domestic market.
“The priority is to ensure that investment management, financial discipline and risk management continue to be strengthened so that the interests of depositors can be protected sustainably,” he said in a statement today.
He said developments following the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) Report concerning the management and operations related to TH for the period from 2014 to 2020 should be viewed in the context of continuing efforts to strengthen governance, accountability and confidence in national institutions.
Akmal Nasrullah said the goverment respects the ongoing investigation process and that any related action should be carried out in accordance with the law and left to the relevant authorities.
As of early August 2026, TH said that more than 75 per cent of the RCI’s recommendations had been implemented, while implementation of the remaining recommendations for improvement was ongoing.
The minister said strengthening the institution is also in line with the MADANI Economy framework and the implementation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), 2026–2030, themed “Redsigning Development.”
According to him, 13MP continues the aspirations of the MADANI Economy through efforts to raise the economic growth ceiling, raise the floor of people’s standard of living, and strengthen good governance.
“Institutional strengthening is becoming increasingly important as Malaysia’s economy records strong growth momentum.
“The economy grew by 6.0 per cent in the second quarter of 2026, while growth for the first half of this year stood at 5.7 per cent, compared with 4.5 per cent for the same period last year,” he said.
Akmal Nasrullah said this growth momentum needs to be supported by well-functioning institutions, policy certainty and consistent implementation of reforms in order to maintain business and investor confidence and strengthen the resilience of the national economy.
He said the Economy Ministry will continue to focus on implementing 13MP, particularly on improving productivity and competitiveness, accelerating quality investments, and creating high-value jobs so that economic growth can translate into higher incomes and an improved standard of living for the people.
