JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today graciously contributed RM2,000 to each of the 41 families affected by a fire incident at Kampung Orang Asli Teluk Jawa here yesterday.

This was shared via a post on the Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar Facebook page tonight, accompanied by photographs.

The contributions channelled through Yayasan Sultan Ibrahim Johor (YSIJ) also included the distribution of disaster kits comprising basic necessities such as electric kettles and rice cookers, foldable mattresses, t-shirts, telekung and mineral water.

YSIJ managing trustee Datuk Avinderjit Singh presented the contributions at a simple ceremony held at the relief centre at Dewan Muafakat Taman Megah Ria. Johor Bahru Mayor Datuk Mohd Haffiz Ahmad was also present.

“This contribution is among efforts to help ease the financial burden of the victims, most of whom are fishermen and self-employed,” read the post.

Meanwhile, Johor Bahru district officer Mohd Masni Wakiman and the Johor Bahru District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) chairman expressed their gratitude to His Majesty for the contribution and concern for the affected victims.

“We and several other government agencies will ensure the welfare of all victims is safeguarded at all times and that they are provided with proper accommodation as soon as possible,” he said.

One of the victims, Uji Jumaat, 49, expressed gratitude for the contribution from Sultan Ibrahim.

“Nothing could be saved, but with the assistance extended, at least we can continue our lives. Thank you, Your Majesty, for helping us,” he said.

Yesterday, Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief Deputy Fire Superintendent II Firdaus Ahmad was reported as saying that 30 houses were destroyed in the fire at the stilted village in Kampung Teluk Jawa, involving temporary structures with wooden walls, zinc roofs and wooden floors.
