Why The Grand Mosque’s Marble Remains Cool In Extreme Heat

MAKKAH, Feb 13 (Bernama-SPA) -- The marble of the circumambulation area, or Mataf, in the Grand Mosque remains cool throughout the day despite intense sunlight, thanks to a sophisticated integration of natural materials and thermal engineering.

The surface is composed of high-quality, light-coloured natural marble with a low heat-absorption coefficient, enabling it to reflect solar radiation rather than retain heat, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

This effect is enhanced by a structural design that uses thick marble slabs installed over specialised insulating layers and air-permeable spaces, accelerating heat dissipation.

Combined with the vast open-air layout and continuous airflow generated by the movement of worshippers, these engineering solutions help maintain a moderate surface temperature, providing a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims during peak hours.
