National Biodiesel Programme Gradually Expanding To B20 -- KPK
KUALA LUMPUR, April 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is progressively expanding its National Biodiesel Programme from B10 to B20 for the land transport sector, increasing the biodiesel blend, supported by strong industry readiness, the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) said.
In a statement today, the ministry said the rollout is being sustainably supported by an established supply chain comprising 19 licensed biodiesel production plants supplying Palm Methyl Ester to 34 blending depots nationwide.
It added that the capacity of local biodiesel producers to meet international quality standards reflects the industry’s readiness, as well as the strength of domestic infrastructure and supply chains.
“This reinforces confidence that Malaysia is prepared to transition towards B20 biodiesel blending, in line with the aspirations of the National Agricommodity Policy 2021-2030,” KPK said.
Beyond the use of crude palm oil as a feedstock for biodiesel production, the government is also encouraging second-generation feedstocks such as sludge palm oil and used cooking oil for the production of biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel.
KPK said second-generation biofuel production in Malaysia is largely oriented towards export markets, given strong international demand for low-carbon fuels and the need to comply with global sustainability standards.
The ministry said it is also refining and reviewing the National Biofuel Policy in line with the energy transition agenda and its net-zero commitment by 2050.
“This strategic initiative aims to strengthen national energy security through the utilisation of biomass resources and the circular economy, while ensuring Malaysia’s biofuel products remain competitive and comply with international sustainability standards in addressing climate change challenges,” it added.
KPK said it will continue to strengthen strategic collaboration through ongoing engagement sessions with stakeholders and industry players, to ensure all policies are formulated based on comprehensive analysis.
