HYDERABAD, April 17 (Bernama) -- Sri Lanka’s Power and Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody resigned on Friday over a coal import controversy.

The minister tendered his resignation to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to “facilitate an impartial and independent investigation to be conducted by the Special Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the coal import process”, the President's Media Division (PMD) said in a statement.

The ministry's secretary Udayanga Hemapala has also resigned from his post.

A police complaint was filed on April 11 seeking a formal investigation into coal imports for power generation since 2009.

There are accusations that low-grade coal imports affected the country's electricity generation.

The issue of alleged coal import irregularities was also raised in the Sri Lankan parliament.

Jayakody on April 10 survived a no-confidence motion presented by opposition lawmakers.
