JAKARTA, April 7 (Bernama) -- The Indonesian Navy is investigating the discovery of a suspected unmanned submarine in the northern strait of Gili Trawangan, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

According to ANTARA News Agency, Indonesian Navy Information Service Head Rear Admiral Tunggul said expert teams would conduct a detailed technical assessment of the vessel to determine its origin, function and any data it may contain.

“The device (submarine) will undergo a thorough technical assessment to establish where it came from, what it was used for and whether it contains any recoverable data,” he said.

Tunggul said the unmanned submarine was initially discovered by fishermen in the northern strait of Gili Trawangan, who reported the finding to nearby Navy personnel.

It was later evacuated and handed over to the Gili Air Naval Post for further investigation.

Tunggul said a security cordon had been put in place around the object to ensure investigation procedures proceed in accordance with established standards.

He added that the Navy remains committed to safeguarding maritime sovereignty and security against any unauthorised activities, including the use of underwater equipment by unauthorised parties in Indonesian waters.
