MOSCOW, March 18 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The United Kingdom will provide an additional £10 million (US$13.3 million) in humanitarian support to Lebanon, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported, quoting UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.
Last week, Cooper said that London would allocate over £5 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon.
"Today, I can announce a further £10 million of humanitarian support to provide emergency medical care, shelter and other lifesaving assistance in Lebanon and the region. This will help prevent further displacement and instability that would risk escalating regional problems and have a wider impact on other countries beyond the region," Cooper told the parliament on Tuesday.
In early March, Hezbollah resumed active military operations against Israel following the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, the Israeli army launched intensive strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut and dozens of cities and towns in southern and eastern Lebanon. According to official figures, 826 people were killed, over 2,000 were injured, and over 800,000 citizens were forced to flee their homes.
