Floods Hit Jakarta, Several Regions Across Indonesia — BNPB

JAKARTA, March 8 (Bernama) — Flooding inundated 105 residential areas and 19 roads in Jakarta following heavy rain over the weekend, while several other regions across Indonesia were also hit by floods and extreme weather, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

BNPB Head of Data, Information and Disaster Communication Centre, Abdul Muhari, said the flooding affected parts of West, South and East Jakarta, with water levels ranging from 20 centimetres (cm) to 170 cm in several locations.

In West Jakarta, 26 residential areas were affected with water levels between 20 cm and 100 cm, while 22 residential areas in South Jakarta were inundated, with the worst flooding reaching 170 cm in Cipete Utara and Pela Mampang. 

“In East Jakarta, 57 residential areas were affected with water levels ranging from 25 cm to 160 cm,” he said in a statement issued at 1.24 pm local time on Sunday.

Abdul Muhari said flooding was also reported in Serang Regency, Banten, affecting 160 households, or 489 people, across four villages following two days of heavy rain.

In Parigi Moutong Regency, Central Sulawesi, he said floods affected 391 households, or 1,089 people, in Moutong Tengah and Moutong Utara villages, although water levels had begun to recede.

Meanwhile, he said floods in Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara, affected 527 houses, two schools and three government offices, and caused one bridge to collapse across nine villages in four districts.

He said that flooding was also reported in South Tangerang City, Banten, where 660 houses and two roads were inundated in Jurangmangu Barat and Pondok Kacang Timur villages, with water levels ranging from 10 cm to 40 cm.

Apart from floods, Abdul Muhari said strong winds and extreme weather were reported in several regions, including Jember, East Java, where 19 houses were damaged and one resident sustained minor injuries.

He added that similar incidents were reported in Purbalingga, Central Java, where 28 houses were damaged and four residents evacuated, and in Cimahi, West Java, where 126 households, or 378 people, were affected by strong winds that damaged homes and other buildings.

Abdul Muhari advised the public to remain vigilant against hydrometeorological disasters, particularly during periods of prolonged rainfall, and urged residents to monitor river water levels and follow official weather updates.
