JAKARTA, March 3 (Bernama) -- Indonesia has taken a further step in its peace initiative by personally reaching out to Iran, following its earlier offer to help facilitate dialogue between Tehran and the United States (US).
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said he had spoken over the phone on the matter with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, on Monday.
“Indonesia stands ready to play a constructive role in advancing peace, including offering our willingness to facilitate dialogue or mediation, with the common objective of preventing further escalation and stopping the unnecessary loss of innocent lives,” he posted on his social media on Tuesday.
The Foreign Ministry on Feb 28, the day Iran was attacked by the US and Israel, conveyed President Prabowo Subianto’s readiness to travel to Tehran and facilitate dialogue, if agreed by both Iran and the US.
Sugiono also called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and pursue immediate de-escalation, stressing that respect for international law and the United Nations (UN) Charter must be upheld.
“Dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths to regional stability,” he said.
