NEW DELHI, Feb 27 (Bernama) — The foreign ministers of Bangladesh and Pakistan held talks in Jeddah as the two countries seek to strengthen their ties following the formation of a newly elected government earlier this month in Dhaka.
Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman met on the sidelines of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) ministerial meeting on Thursday.
Dar told Khalilur Rahman that Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is keen to visit Bangladesh to personally greet Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Friday.
The Pakistan foreign minister expressed hope that under the new government in Bangladesh "the relationship between the two countries will steadily prosper".
Bangladesh and Pakistan have seen significant improvement in their relations since the ouster of pro-India Sheikh Hasina's regime in a mass uprising in 2024.
Dar visited Bangladesh in August last year, marking the first bilateral visit by a Pakistani foreign minister in nearly 13 years.
The countries have restored direct air and shipping links in a boost for commerce and cultural exchanges.
Dar and Khalilur Rahman had "productive discussions on enhancing bilateral cooperation across a broad range of sectors, including trade, culture, technology, and people-to-people exchanges," Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said in a post on X.
