Nationwide Strikes Disrupt Local Public Transport Across Germany

27/02/2026 03:29 PM

BERLIN, Feb 27 (Bernama-dpa) -- Public transport in Germany is experiencing major disruptions as strike action affected municipal bus and train services early on Friday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

A spokesman for the Verdi trade union said that strikes at Germany’s largest local transport operator, Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), began at 3 am (0200 GMT).

Verdi, one of Germany’s major trade unions representing public service and private-sector workers, has called for walkouts across nearly all German states.

In many cities, services operated by municipal transport companies are to be suspended for much of the day.

The strikes were scheduled to begin in the early hours of Friday and, depending on the area, could continue into the early hours of Sunday.

Some local transport operators have already announced that they are running emergency schedules.

The strike will mark the second nationwide action in an ongoing round of collective bargaining.

During the previous strike on February 2, local public transport in large parts of Germany came to an almost complete standstill.
