JAKARTA, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- PT Freeport Indonesia has completed a 27-day operation to recover the bodies of all seven workers who were killed in a fast-moving mud and soil flow at its Grasberg underground mine in Papua province.
Five of the victims were recovered on Oct 5 at the Tembagapura site in Mimika, joining two found on Sept 20, said a unit of Indonesian state-owned Mining Industry Indonesia (MIND ID) and US mining giant Freeport-McMoRan in a statement on Monday.
"The search and rescue was hampered by challenging conditions inside the underground mine and around 800,000 tonnes of shifted mud and soil," PT Freeport Indonesia president director Tony Wenas said.
The victims included three Indonesians and two foreign nationals, one from South Africa and one from Chile.
Investigations into the landslide's cause are ongoing, and PT Freeport Indonesia has pledged to take preventive measures to lower the risk of similar incidents in the future.
The incident took place on Sept 8 at 10 pm local time, when a massive flow of material swept through the mine in the remote highlands.
