MYANMAR 

1. MONSOON PADDY PLANTING TARGETS 400,000 HECTARES -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

The Yangon Region Agriculture Department aims to plant over 400,000 hectares of monsoon paddy in the Region during this season. Most varieties are grown by farmers for domestic consumption and export.

 

2. MYANMAR EXPORTERS ENTER CHINA’S MARKET -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR 

A total of 1,133 Myanmar exporters have been successfully registered with the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China as of August 1. Most food-related businesses have obtained the GACC licences to enter the Chinese market.

 

PHILIPPINES

1. HABAGAT TO BRING RAINS OVER LUZON; STS PODUL TO ENTER TONIGHT — PHILIPPINE NEWS AGENCY

The southwest monsoon or “habagat” will continue to bring rains over parts of Luzon Sunday, while Severe Tropical Storm (STE) Podul is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tonight or early Monday, the state weather bureau said.

A Bangkok-bound train derailed in Kui Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan, injuring several passengers. Rescue teams are providing urgent assistance.  

 

2. BORDER CLASH CLEAN-UP -- BANGKOK POST

Clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border have dealt a heavy blow to the Northeast's economy, with trade losses in four provinces alone estimated at up to 500 million baht a month.

 

VIETNAM 

1. AUGUST DEADLINE FOR 500KV POWER GRID COMPLETION — VIETNAMPLUS 

The government plans to complete a 500kV power transmission line in the northern provinces of Lao Cai and Phu by August 19. The 230 km power grid, costing RM1.2 billion (US$283 million), comprises 468 transmission towers.

 

2. VIETNAM INVESTORS EYE NORTHERN CAMBODIA -- VIETNAMPLUS 

The Vietnam business community aims to expand economic ties in Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri and Kratie provinces in Cambodia’s northern region. They are eyeing more investments, especially in the agriculture sector and rubber production.
