DHAKA, June 7 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Bangladesh will hold its next national elections in the first half of April 2026, interim leader Muhammad Yunus announced on Friday, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
In a televised address, the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate said the core mandate of his administration was centred on reforms, justice and the restoration of democracy through elections.
“After reviewing the ongoing reform activities related to justice, reforms and elections, I am announcing to the people today that the next national election will be held any day in the first half of April 2026,” he said.
He added that the country’s election commission would announce a detailed roadmap in due course.
Yunus has led the caretaker administration since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India following a student-led uprising in August last year.
The interim government was established amid calls for institutional reforms and greater accountability, following years of political unrest.
“One of the biggest responsibilities of this government is to ensure a transparent and widely participatory election so that the country does not fall into a new phase of crisis,” he said, stressing that institutional reform remained a top priority.
His statement comes amid increasing pressure from political parties, particularly the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which has demanded elections be held by December 2025.
