Malaysia Shares Policy On Bursa Carbon Exhchange At Glaciers' Preservation Conference In Tajikistan

KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s participation in inaugural High-Level Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from May 29 to 31 recently reflected the country’s solidarity with Central Asian nations on climate change, said Ambassador to Uzbekistan,  Ilham Tuah Illias, who is also concurrently accredited to the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Tajikistan.

Ilham Tuah said Malaysia’s attendance showed support to countries facing melting glaciers.

“In my speech at the sessions for Head of Delegation Statements, I shared Malaysia’s consistent implementation of national policies in keeping with the objectives of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Paris Agreement.

“Among the policies that attracted the participants’ attention were the Bursa Carbon Exchange, the world’s first Syariah-compliant Voluntary Carbon Market,” he told Bernama in a statement Tuesday.

According to Ilham Tuah, the conference is timely as the world is facing a grim future due to the effects of global warming.

“The meeting noted that by the end of this century, more than half of the world’s glaciers that supplies the rivers will disappear,” he added.

Another Malaysian representative at the conference was Dr Muhammad Hafeez Jeofry, an expert on polar ice sheets and environmental geoscientist from the Faculty of Science and Marine Environment of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

According to Muhammad Hafeez, he delivered a talk on the impacts of global warming on Antarctic ice sheet stability, receiving strong interest from academic delegates.

The presentation highlighted the urgent need to understand polar ice dynamics and their far-reaching consequences on global sea levels.

“The talk sparked positive feedback and opened doors for potential international research collaborations, especially in climate and sea level rise studies. I also shared findings from ongoing research focused on projected sea level rise in Southeast Asia, including vulnerable regions such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand,” he added.

The conference brought together participants from 115 countries, including several Southeast Asian nations such as Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand, reflecting the growing regional concern over coastal impacts linked to Antarctic and Greenland ice melt.

In a statement prior to the event, the Tajikistan Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said the conference aimed to  draw global attention to the urgent issue of glacier melting and help strengthen international cooperation, funding, and action to protect glaciers and water resources.
