SEOUL/POHANG, May 29 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- A South Korean Navy patrol aircraft with four crew members on board crashed into a mountain in the southeastern city of Pohang on Thursday, Yonhap news agency quoted the authorities.

The crash occurred at approximately 1.50 pm (local time), shortly after the P-3 maritime patrol plane departed for a training mission from a naval air base in the city.

“Due to unidentified reasons, a P-3 aircraft that took off from Pohang at 1.43 pm crashed nearby,” the Navy said in a notice to the media.

Witnesses at the scene reported smoke rising from the mountainside, prompting emergency response efforts.

The Navy confirmed four personnel were aboard the aircraft. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and the status of those on board.

Firefighters have been deployed to the site to extinguish the blaze and assist in recovery operations.
