KOTA BHARU, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan Deaf Sports Association (KelSDeaf) is aiming to raise RM100,000 to make thorough preparations for the 22nd Malaysian Deaf Games (SOPMA) scheduled to be held in Sarawak this October.
In a statement today, KelSDeaf said the fundraising was to cover the costs of training, athletes’ equipment, transportation, accommodation and contingent expenses.
“This fund is very important to ensure Kelantan’s deaf athletes can perform with the best preparation on the national stage.
“The participation of deaf athletes in SOPMA not only creates opportunities for talent and potential development but also serves as a symbol of sportsmanship and the integration of the deaf community into mainstream society,” it said.
According to the statement, the Kelantan contingent will comprise 40 athletes and officials competing in four events, namely Badminton, Bowling, Futsal and Orienteering.
KelSDeaf said the success of the special group at national and international levels proved their capabilities, which deserved proper recognition and strong support.
“Therefore, KelSDeaf humbly calls on all Kelantanese, government agencies, corporate bodies and caring individuals to contribute and extend moral support to this contingent.
“Every contribution, big or small, is meaningful in uplifting the spirit of Kelantan’s deaf athletes,” it said.
KelSDeaf also expressed its appreciation to all who had extended assistance and hoped that the noble effort would inspire athletes to bring glory to Kelantan at the 22nd SOPMA.
Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf) president Saiful Helmie also supported the initiative, with the session interpreted by MSDeaf assistant secretary-general and sign language interpreter, Mohamad Nazrul Azwa.
“Kelantan-born athletes Mohd Faza Firdaus and Nur Ain Shafira, who recently represented Malaysia at the 2nd SEA Deaf Games in Jakarta 2025, also served as inspiration after winning silver medals in the men’s and women’s futsal events,” it said.
