Tze Yong To Undergo Surgery Following ACL Injury - BAM

06/06/2025 11:27 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have confirmed that national men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong will undergo knee surgery after scans revealed an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during his opening-round match at the Malaysia Masters 2025 on May 21.

BAM said in a statement that Tze Yong, 25, was forced to retire from the match against Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long due to pain in his knee and a thorough medical examination and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) have since confirmed a torn ACL requiring surgical intervention.

He is currently undergoing prehabilitation (prehab) to strengthen the knee and the surrounding muscles ahead of the scheduled surgery.

Meanwhile, national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen said Tze Yong is mentally strong and focused on the recovery process.

“Our medical and coaching teams are working closely with him to ensure he gets the best care possible. We will support him every step of the way, both on and off court,” he said.

Despite the setback, Tze Yong is optimistic and committed to his rehabilitation journey and expressed his sincere appreciation to BAM, the National Sports Institute (ISN) and everyone on the medical and coaching teams for their constant support and care.

“It’s tough to accept, especially after all the hard work leading up to this point, but I know this is just another challenge to overcome. I’m staying positive, following the prehab plan, and I’m fully focused on coming back stronger. I also want to thank all my fans for your kind messages - it really means a lot to me,” said Tze Yong.

Tze Yong has suffered various injuries, including a muscle tear in his back followed by a spinal injury since last year and underwent a long period of rest and rehabilitation before returning to action in the Badminton Asia Championship 2025 in Ningbo, China, in April.
