KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia turned on the style to capture five golds and a silver in the foam ball and fabric ball categories of the Asian Dodgeball Championships 2023 at the Tampines Sport Hub, Singapore.
In the foam ball category, Malaysia emerged as the best among the 11 participating countries after clinching gold in the men’s, women’s and mixed team events in the Nov 17-19 tournament.
The men’s and mixed teams stunned Australia 10-2 and 11-6 respectively in the final, while the women's team downed Hong Kong 6-3 for victory.
Meanwhile, in the fabric ball category, Malaysia continued their dominance by winning the men’s and mixed team gold medals by trouncing Australia 26-12 and 32-6 respectively.
However, the national team missed out on a double hat-trick when the national women’s team were edged 14-16 by invitational team Australia.
Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Pakistan, Taiwan, Thailand and hosts Singapore also participated in the inaugural tournament.
Malaysia Association of Dodgeball (MAD) president Datuk V. Radha Krishnan lauded the national teams’ achievements, saying the players were outstanding against some of the best teams after undergoing three months of intensive training.
“Competition was very tough because most countries sent their first team as some of them are preparing for the World Championship in Austria next year. But our players showed great class to return with five golds and a silver.
“Malaysia remains a powerhouse in Asian dodgeball and three of our players also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award. So, MAD is very satisfied with the performance of our team. Even Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and her deputy Adam Adli Abd Halim texted me, congratulating the teams for the success,” he said when contacted.
