KOTA BHARU, July 19 -- The Kelantan Badminton Association (PBNK) is discussing with a former national badminton champion for the chief coach post to train new talents in the effort to turn the state into a major powerhouse at national and international levels.
Without revealing the personality, PBNK president, Dr Naharuddin Hashim said the move is an attempt and plan by the association with the cooperation of Kelantan State Sports Council (MSN) to make the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) Golden Project a success.
Naharuddin said PBNK is also targeting badminton as a gold mine for Kelantan in the 2026 Sukma as they have the prospects with its existing list of players.
“We are still negotiating with the big name and the individual has expressed interest to take on the challenge as head coach.
“The presence of the personality will change the landscape of Kelantan badminton,” he said.
Naharuddin told reporters after a presentation of incentives to national doubles player, Mohd Haikal Nazri and national para badminton singles champion, Muhamad Zulfatihi Jaafar who brought honours to the country and state at international tournaments.
The incentives were presented by state Youth, Sports and NGO Committee chairman Wan Roslan Wan Hamat. Also present was Kelantan MSN director Imran Mansoor.
Mohd Haikal and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi emerged champions of the Austrian Badminton Open Championships while Muhamad Zulfatihi garnered a bronze medal at the Dubai Fazza Para International championships in United Arab Emirates (UAE) in April.
