KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 -- Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan prefers to focus on his responsibility as Malaysian Football League (MFL) chief executive officer instead of the president’s post that will be vacant soon.
He said what was important now was for MFL to ensure that fans would be able to return to stadiums as planned on April 2 and April 3.
“I am just doing my duty as the CEO today, with the current situation requiring me to focus on the standard operating procedure (on supporters management protocol). If successful, we will bring in (more) supporters.
“As for the president’s post, I am not thinking about it… that’s up to the Board of Directors because they are the ones who will decide,” he told Bernama.
On March 13, MFL president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, who is also the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) chief, had voiced his intention to relinquish his post with the MFL soon to fully focus on developing FAM.
Apart from Ab Ghani, another name being touted for the MFL president’s post is AirAsia Group Bhd chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, who has already stated his willingness to take over from Hamidin.
Meanwhile, Ab Ghani emphasised that this season’s Malaysia League (M-League) would have no problem coping with its fixtures should the government find that they have flouted the stipulated SOP.
“MFL’s target is to complete all 22 matches, with the Malaysia Cup and Challenge Cup waiting in the wings,” he explained.
He also touched on the controversy surrounding match officials in the M-League, especially regarding players pushing referees aggressively.
Ab Ghani said that the matter had been discussed by the FAM Referees Committee and that FAM and MFL’s priority now was to ensure that the quality of refereeing is enhanced,
