KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 -- The inclusion of tenpin bowling among the 40 sports to be contested at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam has certainly lifted the spirits of the national keglers to strive for glory.

Malaysian Tenping Bowling Congress (MTBC) secretary-general Maradona Chok said the association was delighted with yesterday's announcement by Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria that the sport has made the cut for the biennial games.

"Of course, we're happy that tenpin bowling is included in the 2021 SEA Games, which will enable our keglers to test their strength against regional rivals,” he told Bernama today.

"We are not setting a high target for gold medals since Vietnam have decided to feature only six events, compared to nine in the 2019 edition in the Philippines. But we hope our keglers can perform better,” Maradona added.

The six events to be contested at the 2021 Games are singles, doubles and team events in both men and women categories. The mixed doubles and masters events have been dropped.

Meanwhile, Maradona said MTBC was still waiting for the final calendar for next year's competitions from the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) and World Bowling.

"Based on their initial calendar, there would be a number of competitions taking place next year such as the Asian Indoor Championships in May, Asian Championships, World Youth and World Juniors in June, but we will have to wait for the final confirmation from them,” he added.

Several local competitions were cancelled by MTBC this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Malaysian Open, national and inter-state championships.

The last competition the national squad took part in was the 2019 SEA Games, where Malaysia won two gold medals through Timmy Tan in the men's singles and Muhammad Rafiq Ismail, Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam, Timmy and Ahmad Muaz Fishol in the team of four.

Malaysia also won three silvers and two bronzes.
