GEORGE TOWN, June 1 (Bernama) -- For R Arese Nesi, 24, her name not only reflects her identity, but also symbolises affection, loyalty and respect for the monarchy, an institution that is a pillar of the country.

The name Arese Nesi is actually an abbreviation of “Arasanai-nesi” in Tamil, meaning affection or love for the King and was given by her grandfather, S Sivasubramaniam, on June 1, 2002, the day she was born, which coincidentally was also the the official birthday of the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Twenty-four years later, the date has once again taken on special significance, as this year’s Official Birthday celebration of Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia is also being observed on June 1, 2026.

Arese Nesi said that whenever her birthday approaches, she is reminded of the profound meaning behind the name chosen by her grandfather, a traditional Indian musician from Penang who was also well-versed in Tamil literature.

“June 1 is very special to me because it is both the day I was born and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday. Growing up, I learned to appreciate the meaning and strength behind my name.

“Many people have modern names, I am grateful to have one that carries historical value and such a precious meaning,” the social media influencer told Bernama today, adding that it was a gift with its own unique value as every birthday felt somewhat different from those of others.

Arese Nesi also stressed that the values of affection, love, loyalty and devotion to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as embodied in the spirit of the Rukun Negara, are important for every Malaysian to embrace regardless of race or religion.

She said that as a country practising a constitutional monarchy system, the institution of the monarchy must continue to be respected and preserved by all citizens.

“This name constantly reminds me of my responsibilities as a Malaysian citizen and makes me appreciate more deeply the values of loyalty, unity and patriotism.

“When people say my name is unique and beautiful, it reminds me of how special it is. I also always strive to be a unique individual and to give my best in everything I do,” she said.

Arese Nesi is also grateful that her grandfather chose her name and that her parents accepted the suggestion without hesitation as she felt fortunate to bear a name with such profound and valuable meaning.

She believes her name will continue to guide him throughout life, reminding her of her roots, her responsibilities as a Malaysian citizen, and the importance of maintaining affection for the country and the institution that symbolises national unity.
