Sarawak Pushes Circular Economy With Gas-to-energy Under Green Agenda

KUCHING, April 27 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak state government has reaffirmed its commitment to a sustainable future by advancing a circular economy approach that turns waste into valuable resources, particularly renewable energy through gas-to-energy (GTE) technology.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state is focusing on repurposing and reintegrating waste rather than simply disposing of it, as part of its broader green energy agenda for long-term sustainability.

“This is the future we envision for Sarawak, and we have embarked on strategic initiatives under a new green energy agenda,” he said after receiving a briefing on the GTE cogeneration plant prototype at the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park here today.

He said the key benefit of the GTE approach is its ability to convert methane gas from landfill waste into renewable electricity, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while producing clean, usable energy.

“This not only addresses environmental concerns such as methane pollution, but also strengthens energy security by generating an additional source of renewable power,” he said.

He added that waste generation in the state has risen steadily to about 700 tonnes per day, driven by population growth and increased consumption.
