MAKKAH, April 26 (Bernama) -- Pilgrims who once relied on religious guides or scheduled briefings for clarification on rulings can now obtain answers instantly, following the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Pilgrims Fund Board’s (TH) e-TAIB Live Chat platform.
For the first time, AI is being used as an “instant assistant” to respond to pilgrims’ queries in real time, enabling faster access to religious guidance throughout the Haj season.
TH Haj Guidance Operations director Shahrin Awaluddin said the initiative offers added convenience, especially for pilgrims who require immediate answers in urgent situations while in the Holy Land.
“Through e-TAIB, pilgrims can directly ask questions related to rituals and rulings. AI provides instant responses, and if necessary, e-TAIB personnel will step in to offer further clarification.
“This is particularly helpful when pilgrims face situations requiring prompt certainty, such as restrictions during ihram or obligations involving dam (penalties),” he told reporters here on Friday.
Shahrin said the use of WhatsApp as an interaction platform has improved accessibility, noting that the system received about 300 queries on its first day alone.
“This shows that pilgrims need a fast and accessible channel. Most already understand the basics, but seek confirmation to carry out their rituals with confidence,” he said.
He added that frequently asked questions include issues related to hair loss during ihram, the use of fragrances and matters concerning women’s fiqh (religious ruling).
At the same time, Shahrin stressed that the system is closely monitored by experts to ensure the accuracy of responses.
“AI does not replace human guides, but complements their role. We have 56 guidance personnel, including Haj advisors - Pembimbing Ibadat Haji Tanah Suci (PIHTAS) and counsellors, who are always ready to assist.
“All responses are based on official TH references verified by experts and aligned with Haj muzakarah decisions,” he said.
He added that dedicated platforms such as e-TAIB help prevent confusion among pilgrims who might otherwise refer to external sources with differing scholarly views.
At the same time, TH is emphasising the understanding of Haj maqasid (objectives) this year, ensuring that pilgrims not only perform the rituals correctly but also appreciate their deeper meaning.
“Technology makes things easier, but our goal remains the same - to guide pilgrims towards achieving a Mabrur Haj (accepted pilgrimage),” he said.
