Former Radio Announcer Mariamah Tijo Laid To Rest

SUBANG JAYA, April 23 (Bernama) -- Former radio announcer with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) Mariamah Tijo was laid to rest at the USJ 22 Muslim Cemetery here today.

The van carrying her remains arrived at the cemetery at 12.30 pm, with her family and friends attending the burial.

The final rites were conducted at Masjid Darul Ehsan SS15 as soon as her remains arrived from University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) at 10.15 am.

Former manager of Radio Klasik Nasional, Datuk Chuari Selamat, who had known Mariamah since starting at RTM in 1973, described her as highly creative and adept at writing drama scripts and poetry.

He fondly recalled travelling with her for the pantun exchange programme, Salam Muhibah, in Jakarta in the early 1980s.

"We were the pioneers of the Salam Muhibah pantun exchange between RTM Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta radio stations," he said.

Film director Aziz M. Osman, who had known the late Mariamah since the mid-1970s, said they were so close that he saw her as his own mother.

"I am also very close to her children. I managed to meet her a few months ago when she fell seriously ill," he said.

A member of Ruffedge, a popular music group, Azan Addin remembered Mariamah as friendly, with a passion for poetry, performing sketches, and singing.

Mariamah, 76, passed away this morning at 5 am, surrounded by her family, at University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), after she was admitted on Tuesday night.

Bedridden for four years after a stroke, she received Tabung Kasih@HAWANA aid on March 20, 2024.
