KOTA TINGGI, March 25 (Bernama) --The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) rescued five Thai crew members after the cargo vessel they were on caught fire in the galley yesterday.

Acting Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone director maritime commander Mohd Najib Sam said the men, aged between 25 and 61, suffered burns, with some injuries classified as serious.

The incident occurred about 30 nautical miles east of Tanjung Sedili at around 10.20am.

He said the Johor Bahru Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) received the emergency call at 12.20pm, before deploying the Pekasa 30 boat to carry out a medical evacuation (Medevac) operation.

“The fire was successfully brought under control by the crew before assistance arrived,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Najib said MMEA conducted an initial assessment at the scene before transporting all victims ashore for further treatment.

The operation was completed after all victims were safely evacuated and handed over to medical personnel.

“We remain committed to ensuring the safety of the nation’s waters and providing immediate assistance to the maritime community in need,” he said.
