Celebrate Ramadan In Healthy, Meaningful Way - SMC

SHAH ALAM, March 6 (Bernama) -- Sunway Medical Centre (SMC), Bandar Sunway, together with the Shah Alam community, is fostering the spirit of Ramadan in a healthier and more meaningful way through the  “Manisnya Ramadan Bersama SunMed” programme.

Its chief executive officer, Dr Seow Vei Ken, said the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative goes beyond the distribution of bubur lambuk to the local community, serving as a platform to promote awareness of the importance of maintaining good health during the fasting month.

“We believe that good health begins with a harmonious community. Through this programme, we want to celebrate Ramadan in a healthy and meaningful way with the Shah Alam community, whom we consider our neighbours.

“Today’s programme includes a bubur lambuk cooking activity, followed by health screenings and a communal breaking of fast,” he said when met during the event at the Seksyen 7 Mosque in Shah Alam yesterday.

He added that the hospital’s role extends beyond providing clinical treatment, encompassing efforts to reach out to the community through health education and awareness initiatives.

Meanwhile, SMC Assistant Medical Director and Emergency Physician Dr Nur Elayni Borhan said the hospital introduced various health screening initiatives during the programme to make it easier for the public to undergo free basic health checks.

She said the approach aligns with SMC’s aim to encourage healthier lifestyles during Ramadan, rather than viewing the fasting month solely as a period of abstaining from food and drink.

“This is the best opportunity for the Shah Alam community to come to the mosque and undergo health checks. We are also providing comprehensive screenings to help them better understand their health status,” she said.

Apart from health screenings, SMC also conducted a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training session focusing on chest compression techniques, or hands-only CPR, led by SMC Emergency Physician Dr Mohd Khalis Abdul Rahim.

Dr Nur Elayni said the exposure to basic life-saving skills is important in preparing the public to respond to emergency situations.

“It is very important because if an emergency happens to a loved one at home, they will know the initial steps to take before the patient is sent to the hospital,” she said.

She added that such initiatives aim to ensure Ramadan celebrations are not only spiritually meaningful but also contribute to strengthening community health and safety awareness.
