KUCHING, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- The body of a teenage boy, who was feared to have drowned after falling into a river in Kampung Kolong Sungai Tengah, near Sekolah Kebangsaan Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mohamed, here on Friday (Feb 20), was found today.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre said the body of 16-year-old Fahril Zaquan Hasbullah was found about 2.7 kilometres (km) from the Disaster Operations Control Centre (PKOB) that was activated.

"We initially received information that members of the public discovered the victim's body. The search and rescue (SAR) team then headed to the location to make verification,” it said in a statement.

The body was taken to the Masjid Kampung Tengah Sungai jetty for identification by his family and handed over to the police.

On Friday (Feb 20), the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department initiated the SAR operation together with the relevant agencies after receiving a report on the day of the incident.

It was learnt that during the incident, the victim was playing with a friend on the riverbank before falling into the water.

The victim was swept away by the strong current, and his friends reported the incident to local residents after failing to rescue him.
