Trump Raises Global Tariff To 15 Pct After US Supreme Court Ruling

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 (Bernama) -- United States (US) President Donald Trump said he would raise the global tariff to 15 per cent from 10 per cent, following a US Supreme Court ruling that struck down most of his earlier trade measures.

In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump said the increase, to be imposed under Section 122, would take effect immediately and would be over and above existing tariffs.

“I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10 per cent Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been ‘ripping’ the US off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15 per cent level,” he wrote.

He added that the Trump administration would determine and issue the new legally permissible tariffs.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court said the president’s use of emergency powers to hit nearly all of America’s trading partners with so-called reciprocal tariffs was unconstitutional.

Upholding the lower court’s findings, the highest court also ruled that Trump had overstepped his presidential powers when he used the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose sweeping global tariffs, as well as fentanyl-related duties on goods from China, Canada and Mexico.

The decision striking down most of Trump’s tariffs was set out in a 170-page ruling.

Subsequently, Trump said he had signed documents imposing a 10 per cent tariff on all imports from every country.
