NEW DELHI, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- At least 18 people were killed on Thursday in a dynamite explosion at an illegal coal mine in India’s northeastern state of Meghalaya.

According to state Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the explosion occurred at an illegal coal mine in East Jaintia Hills district at around 11 am in a remote area located about 25 kilometres from the district headquarters.

One worker was injured and admitted to hospital following the incident. The workers were involved in unauthorised coal extraction through so-called “rat-hole” mining, which involves digging narrow tunnels.

Sangma appealed to people to work only in "scientific mining", warning that illegal activities would not be tolerated.

"Individuals who are involved in any kind of illegal activities, action will be taken. Whoever is responsible for this particular incident, very strict action will be taken," he told reporters.
