Medical Lab Officer Charged With Attempted Murder Of Ex-girlfriend

KAJANG, Feb 5 (Bernama) -- A medical laboratory officer pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to charges of attempted murder and committing mischief by fire in an attack on his former girlfriend last week.

S Parthiban, 43, faces one count under Section 307 of the Penal Code for allegedly pouring petrol over his 43-year-old former partner, with knowledge that the act could cause her death. an offence that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine.

The widowed father of one also faces a charge under Section 435 of the Penal Code for allegedly setting fire to the woman's vehicle using petrol, causing damage, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine.

The alleged offences took place at a residence in Bandar Teknologi Kajang, Hulu Langat, at approximately 3.20 pm on Jan 30. 

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin did not offer bail, as attempted murder is a non-bailable offence.

"If the court is inclined to grant bail, we request a substantial sum of approximately RM10,000 per charge, with several additional conditions.

"These conditions are the surrender of the accused's passport to the court, a non-interference order regarding the victim and prosecution witnesses, and to report monthly to the nearest police station pending the conclusion of the case," she submitted.

Parthiban, who was unrepresented, requested a reduced bail amount, saying he was the sole guardian of his nine-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

Judge Khainur Aleeza Ismail granted bail at RM16,000 for both charges with one surety, imposed the prosecution's requested conditions, and scheduled the next mention of the case for April 10.
