Death Toll In Spanish Train Accident Rises To 46

MADRID, Jan 31 (Bernama-dpa) -- Twelve days after the devastating train crash in southern Spain, a seriously injured woman died of her injuries in hospital on Friday, according to the state TV broadcaster RTVE and other Spanish media, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

This brings the death toll in one of the worst rail disasters in the country’s history up to 46.

Doctors have been trying, since the accident on the evening of January 18, to save the life of the 42-year-old from La Palma del Condado, who was being treated in the intensive care unit of the Reina Sofía hospital in Córdoba.

Shortly before news of her death, the authorities said that 17 of the originally more than 120 injured people were still in intensive care, RTVE further reported.

According to the initial preliminary assessment of an official investigation commission, the collision between two high-speed trains was triggered by a rail break.

The rear carriages of one train derailed and entered the adjacent track. An oncoming train collided with those carriages and was thrown off the track at a speed of more than 200 kilometres per hour (km/h).

On Thursday, relatives at a memorial service in Huelva with around 4,000 participants demanded the truth about the cause of the accident. Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were also present.

However, it could be weeks or months before the final official investigation result is available.
