PM Anwar Wants Enforcement Aspect To Be Given Emphasis By Cabinet Ministers - Fahmi

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 30 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that several major issues, especially those involving enforcement aspects as raised previously, should be given serious attention and emphasis by all members of the Cabinet, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesperson, said the step needed to be taken following a review of several actions taken by enforcement bodies found that certain approaches were seen as less helpful in strengthening public trust.

“This is because if we look at some of the actions that have been taken by the enforcement bodies, it may not be very helpful.

“It can erode the people’s confidence in the enforcement institutions,” he said in a weekly press conference here today.

Fahmi said the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar would convey a reminder to all secretaries-general of Ministries to ensure that the integrity aspect is streamlined and that no undesirable things occur.

On Wednesday, Anwar warned that the government could no longer tolerate weaknesses in enforcement and governance that were not addressed seriously, while stressing that Malaysia needed to be saved from various activities that damaged the integrity of the enforcement forces and affected the national economy.

This was emphasised by the Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s Address with Heads of Departments, Enforcement Agencies Related to Financial Crimes recently.

Giving an example of the latest case involving the director-general and deputy director-general of Environment, Fahmi said the government would not intervene, but rather leave it to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to take action.

“On the part of the Cabinet, we have not taken any action, this is an action from an enforcement body such as the MACC,” he said.

Media reported that the director-general and deputy director-general of the Department of Environment as well as an assistant environment control officer have been remanded for seven days starting today to assist in the investigation of a case related to the management of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste).

The case is being investigated under the provisions of the MACC Act 2009.
