MOSCOW, Jan 6 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- Dominica has signed an agreement with the United States (US) to accept refugees from third countries seeking asylum in America, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said during a press conference, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"The US and the Council of Dominica have entered into an agreement to facilitate third-country refugees to be sent to Dominica to mitigate scenarios where the US cannot return these individuals to the state of birth or origin," Skerrit told reporters on Monday.

The agreement is part of the December 16 proclamation announcing partial visa restrictions.

Skerrit said that negotiations included discussions on avoiding the transfer of aggressive refugees or individuals who could threaten the security of the Caribbean island nation, a point US State Department representatives acknowledged.

Turning to the US military operation in Venezuela, Skerrit said he was concerned for the Venezuelan people and noted that events in one Caribbean country rippled through the region.

"Dominica reiterates its call for the rule of law to be observed and for ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure Venezuela's stability, good governance, democracy and peace. Dominica remains steady, ready to support all such efforts," he stated.
