PUTRAJAYA, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- The institutional reform measures announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, including the proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s term of office to two terms or ten years and the separation of powers between the Attorney-General and the public prosecutor, have been described as an important development in strengthening the country’s democratic system.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the measures were critical to establish stronger checks and balances within national institutions, while also preventing the concentration or monopoly of power in key positions.
“I welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement to implement these important institutional reforms.
“The MADANI Government remains committed to realising the institutional reform agenda to strengthen democracy, the rule of law and good governance, in line with the interests of the people and for the future of the country,” he said in a statement today.
Nga said the government also intends to strengthen public trust and the principle of transparency through the tabling of the Freedom of Information Bill 2026, thus providing the public with broader access to government information and decisions.
The Act is expected to complement the role of the Malaysian Media Council in ensuring access to accurate and relevant information, thereby nurturing a MADANI society that is able to make important, informed decisions in daily life, he added.
Nga also noted that the Prime Minister’s 2026 Address today was a continuation of the MADANI Government’s earlier achievements over its three years of administration, which include the enactment of the Parliamentary Services Act 2025, which allows Parliament autonomy to manage its own governance and administration, thereby strengthening the doctrine of separation of powers.
The government also introduced the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Act 2025 to improve service efficiency, reduce bureaucratic red tape by at least 25 per cent within three years, and strengthen accountability in governance as well as the Government Procurement Act 2025 to enhance transparency, integrity and efficiency in public procurement processes.
The automatic granting of citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian citizen mothers and foreign fathers is a progressive step that uplifts the status of women and the principle of gender equality, he added.
“Clearly, the reforms being vigorously carried out by the MADANI Government not only fulfil manifesto promises, but will also undoubtedly raise the levels of transparency, accountability and integrity within the country’s administrative and legal systems.
“I urge all Malaysians to stand firmly together with the MADANI Government led by the Prime Minister so that Malaysia can continue moving towards excellence and be highly regarded on the world stage,” he said.
