PERKESO's Lindung 24/7 Provides Comprehensive Social Protection For Workers

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the Non-Work-Related Accident Scheme, or LINDUNG 24/7, by the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) represents a key step in strengthening social protection for workers amid the shift towards hybrid and flexible work arrangements.

In a statement today, PERKESO said the scheme’s implementation could address existing gaps in the social protection system, citing statistics from January to September 2023, which recorded 11,851 contributor claims rejected for being classified as non-work-related accidents.

“Therefore, there is an urgent need to introduce a new scheme that offers 24-hour protection for both local and foreign workers in Malaysia.

“Through LINDUNG 24/7, workers will benefit from a comprehensive social safety net, covering accidents that occur outside working hours, unlike the previous scheme, which applied only to work-related incidents,” the statement said.

PERKESO said the move is in line with the evolving working hours and patterns, transitioning from the conventional concept to a hybrid approach, and aims to close gaps in the existing social protection system.

With the implementation of the latest scheme, over 9.6 million active contributors under the LINDUNG Pekerja programme will receive benefits, thereby strengthening the social safety net for workers in Malaysia and putting it on par with global practices.

“This step marks another significant transformation in the history of national social protection under the supervision of PERKESO, in line with the principles of inclusive and comprehensive coverage,” the statement said.

PERKESO also said that the rollout of LINDUNG 24/7 is expected to alleviate financial pressure on the public health system, as it will cover the cost of treatment and rehabilitation for the contributors involved.

It said that under this scheme, eligible workers will receive various benefits, including Medical Benefit, Temporary Disablement Benefit, Permanent Disablement Benefit, Dependents’ Benefit, Constant-Attendance Allowance, Funeral Management Benefit, as well as Rehabilitation and Education Benefits.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong, when tabling the first reading of the bill to amend the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday, described the scheme as a key government initiative aimed at safeguarding the well-being of all workers in Malaysia.

According to the statement, the second and third readings of the bill are expected to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in December this year.

LINDUNG is the rebranding of PERKESO’s social security protection scheme, launched on Aug 22, 2025, as a strategic measure to strengthen the agency’s role in safeguarding the people.
