KERTEH, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- A total of 5,450 Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) houses will be built nationwide this year with an allocation of RM504 million, said Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu.

She said a total of 2,766 houses have been completed by Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), while another 1,310 units are under construction as of Aug 31.

In addition, she added, a total of 1,374 more houses are in the process of being handed over to the contractors.

"The subsidy provided is RM20,000, while the remaining RM55,000 is to be borne by the applicants themselves through interest-free loans with SPNB,” she told reporters after the ceremony to hand over the keys to the RMR homes here today.

Elaborating, Aiman Athirah said Kelantan recorded the highest number of applications for RMR homes, with over 11,000  units completed, followed by Terengganu (over 10,200 units).

Meanwhile, she said that the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) had received a total of 183,522 applications for the RMR programme between 2002 and August 2025, with 88,197 of them being complete applications and 75,563 approved after fulfilling the stipulated conditions.

She added that there are still about 65,000 more applications in the checking and registration process before being listed for approval.

"The application process is carried out through several stages, starting with ensuring the documents are properly filled up, followed by the eligibility evaluation. Some of the main conditions are that the applicants must be in the low-income group, namely RM5,000 and below, do not own a house or live in dilapidated houses and have land to build their own home.

"Priority is given to applicants with families who still do not own a house. For the 65,000 applications that are still being processed, we are creating a shortlist and, at the same time, under the recent National Affordable Housing Council Meeting, we have given our commitment to sort out the remaining applications with the collaboration of the related agencies,” she said.
