ISTANBUL, Sept 22 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Malta will formally recognise the State of Palestine during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Prime Minister Robert Abela announced Monday on arrival in New York.

The move is part of a political commitment Abela had pledged earlier and reflects Malta’s long-standing support for a two-state solution, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) quoted his office as saying in a statement.

“Malta’s position has always been consistent, supporting peace in the Middle East through dialogue and the establishment of two states,” Abela said, adding that the recognition is aimed at strengthening efforts for a lasting settlement.

During his visit, Abela will hold a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings before addressing the General Assembly.

On Sunday, the UK, Canada, Australia and Portugal announced recognition of Palestine, raising the number of UN member states that have taken this step to 153 out of 193.

Eleven other countries, including Malta, Luxembourg, France, Belgium and Armenia, have declared plans to extend recognition during the ongoing 80th UNGA session in New York.
