Malaysia, Italy Strengthen Commitment To Deepening Bilateral Relations

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, underscoring renewed momentum in cooperation following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Rome in July.

Ambassador of Malaysia to Italy, Datuk Zahid Rastam, stressed the solid foundations of Malaysia-Italy relations.

Zahid highlighted the significance of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025 as well as the forthcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026, pointing to opportunities for stronger economic, political, cultural, and people-to-people linkages between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Italy’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Edmondo Cirielli underlined the enduring friendship between Malaysia and Italy, praising the depth of bilateral relations and Malaysia’s growing role on the global stage.

He commended Malaysia’s leadership as Chair of ASEAN in 2025, highlighting its constructive efforts in fostering regional stability and advancing cooperation.

According to Malaysia’s Embassy in Rome, both made these commitments during a diplomatic reception on Sept 9 to commemorate the 68th National Day, 62nd Malaysia Day, and the 92nd Malaysian Armed Forces Day.

The reception was attended by, among others, the Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Dr. Qu Dongyu, senior officials from the Italian Government and Armed Forces, representatives of international organisations, the diplomatic corps, academia, think tanks, and the private sector.

The embassy, in a statement issued from Rome, said guests were treated to a selection of traditional Malaysian and Italian delicacies, symbolising the rich cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The evening was further enlivened by captivating performances from a Malaysian singer, Desiree de Silva, and a Malaysian violinist based in Italy, Andrew Tan.

The embassy said their performances not only added a vibrant cultural dimension to the evening but also showcased Malaysia’s artistic talents on the international stage.

“These celebrations honoured Malaysia’s national milestones and served as an important platform to strengthen bilateral ties, enhance cultural understanding, and unite Malaysians abroad under the spirit of patriotism,” it said.

Earlier on Sept 6, the embassy also hosted a community gathering at Court Delicati, a Malaysian-owned restaurant in Rome, bringing together Malaysians and friends of Malaysia in Italy to celebrate the nation’s heritage, unity, and achievements.

For Malaysians living far from home, the event was a moment of togetherness, a chance to connect, and an opportunity to relive the spirit of “Hari Kebangsaan” with familiar faces and flavours.

In both community and diplomatic settings, the message was clear: Malaysia’s pride, resilience, and friendship continue to resonate far beyond its shores, said the embassy.
