KUCHING, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) will be allocated a plot of land in Samarahan by the state government to build a facility that will house various activities and include a hostel, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said Samarahan was selected for its concentration of higher learning institutions, its proximity to Kuching, and its ease of access from multiple routes.
“We chose a site close to the new airport in Tanjung Embang to make it more convenient for everyone. This, I believe, represents the future of STU,” he said at the union’s 60th Diamond Jubilee dinner here last night.
He suggested that beyond serving as a hostel, the building could also be used for programmes such as courses, seminars, and gatherings, aligning with the state’s education and infrastructure development agenda.
Abang Johari said the Sarawak government plans to build common science laboratories to ensure all students can learn science more effectively, particularly in schools that do not yet have such facilities.
“For subjects such as chemistry, physics, and biology, laboratories are crucial for practical lessons, and the state government will fully fund the construction of these common labs,” he said, adding that the laboratories would be set up at strategic locations in each district and shared by nearby schools without their own science facilities.
