KUCHING, Sept 9  (Bernama) -- Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's visit to Siemens Energy's headquarters in Berlin, Germany, on Monday opened up new opportunities for collaboration in hydrogen production technology.

In a statement issued by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), he said the visit provided Sarawak with an opportunity to gain experience and leverage the state's cutting-edge technology, particularly to increase its hydrogen production capacity.

"Siemens' electrolyser technology is capable of producing up to 350 kilogrammes (kg) of hydrogen per hour, compared to Sarawak's current capacity of around 130 kg per day," he said.

According to him, this technology presents a significant opportunity to enhance the efficiency and capacity of hydrogen production in the future.

Discussions have been held between Siemens Energy, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), and the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications to explore the most suitable form of collaboration, he said.

Also accompanying him on the visit were Sarawak Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Utilities (Sarawak Energy and Petros), Datuk Ibrahim Baki, and SEB Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.

Apart from electrolyser technology, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government is also keen to explore collaborations in the development of gas turbines and with the Siemens Innovation Centre, which offers state-of-the-art simulation facilities for research and development.

“Siemens’ gas turbine technology can be applied in Samalaju (Bintulu), including regular upgrades to the turbines, while the simulation facilities at the Siemens Innovation Centre could be leveraged by users in Sarawak,” he said.

He added that the working visit was highly meaningful as it opened new avenues for collaboration in the field of green energy, aligning with Sarawak’s aspiration to become a regional leader in the hydrogen industry.

Earlier, Abang Johari and his delegation held meetings with Siemens Energy Group Senior Vice-President and Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Thorbjörn Fors, as well as Siemens Energy Executive Vice-President for Global Functions, Juha Pankakoski.
