KOTA BHARU, July 23 (Bernama) -- The Kelantan government is looking into various new revenue streams, including industrial mining of rare earth elements (REE), new energy development and exploration of carbon and hydrogen to generate additional sources of income for the state.
Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said these initiatives aimed to reduce the state's dependency on traditional revenues.
"We always identify new economic opportunities as future economic growth resources, including REE. Kelantan is the second state with the largest mineral resources of non-radioactive rare earth elements (NR-REE) in Malaysia,” he said.
He was replying to a question from Tuan Kamaruzaman Mohamad (PAS-Gual Periok) at the State Legislative Assembly sitting at the Kota Darulnaim Complex here today.
However, Mohamed Fadzli clarified that the state government could not move too fast on certain issues as it needed to comply with the laws and policies stipulated at the Federal level.
"This is because the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) is at the final stage of tabling the National Climate Change Bill, in addition to the National Carbon Market Policy that is expected to be passed by the end of this year,” he said.
